This is really interesting, I will look at their website - but do you know what information they have on any trials they might have done (how effective is this in knowledge retention days, weeks and months done the road)? One other approach that seems intriguing in terms of getting messages to stick is animation. We have blogged about it, but just look up Piya Sorcar's work at stanford (or do a search on our blog for an interview). Great posts by the way.

My impression from speaking to Brian was that they hadn't done much in terms of either outcome or impact evaluation, but are hoping to do more in the near future. If you look on their website, you'll find an evaluation of a SADAG intervention on suicide awareness among South African adolescents, which included one of Books of Hopes' early books. The component of the evaluation covering the books found a 58% increase in knowledge of suicide and depression among the target audience, BUT there seem to be some very significant limitations to the study: the sample size was small, the post-test was conducted only three weeks after the books were distributed, knowledge was the only outcome variable addressed, and it doesn't appear that there was any effort to control for confounders. All of that having been said, the report does contain some interesting feedback on the books themselves gleaned through complementary qualitative research.
